This design was produced in at least five different versions. Some are truncated from the 1845 French original and some fully imagined but with subtle variations. The pattern was imagined again in the 1880’s and lastly in 1910 as a truncated grisaille version.
The two vignettes depict a romanticized view of the real abbey at Jumieges a spectacularly picturesque ruin. This new version takes its inspiration from a fragment in the Historic New England archive. This repeat is the full half-drop design drafted from the various elements of all the previous versions I have seen so far.
Abbaye de Jumieges is available in full glorious color with shaded blue sky and also in grisaille or shades of grey. For the obsessive compulsive of us, myself included, the paper may be ordered with east or west facing shadows, or both so that the shadows all parade around the room following the actual movement of the sun.
